Lifecycle Assessment & Carbon Traceability: Danish Waste Management & Energy Company

Background

A danish waste management and energy company, serving 950,000 residents across 19 municipalities. They focuses on waste collection, recycling, and green energy production, including electricity and district heating.

The company sought to enhance data accessibility on carbon emissions across both upstream and downstream processes, providing customers with greater transparency into their carbon footprint when using its services. The goal was also to assess whether customers would be willing to pay more if carbon footprint tracking was included as part of the waste collection service—a key element in the company’s long-term strategy to invest in a carbon capture facility.

Our role

Our primary role was to facilitate the project scoping through a GAP analysis, ensuring a focused approach on carbon emissions while acknowledging the potential inclusion of other elements in the recycling process. To achieve this, we conducted multiple workshops with key departments, including IT, ESG, waste management, and legal, to identify carbon emission sources and assess the potential for carbon capture in a future facility.

In conclusion we carried out both qualitative and quantitative analyses, facilitating and preparing interviews with key stakeholders. Additionally, we analyzed the Life Cycle of the waste journey—from collection to incineration—to provide a comprehensive understanding of its carbon impact.

Output

  • Assessment of carbon emission sources across the waste management process
  • Identification of key data points for accurate life cycle assessment (LCA)Analysis of data integrity measures to ensure reliable emission tracking
  • Development of a presentation highlighting IT as a crucial enabler for tracking and automating the collection of relevant carbon data
  • Insights into how emission data can support sustainability strategies and regulatory compliance
